Four Levels of Team Performance and Nine Steps to Reach the Top

If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, it’s that nothing great is ever accomplished alone. Whether you’re leading a business, managing a division, or contributing as a member of a team, the key to extraordinary success lies in the people you surround yourself with.

Think about your goals — building a thriving business, serving your clients at the highest level, or creating the best possible life for yourself and your loved ones. No matter what you’re working toward, aligning with the right people and working together to lift one another higher is the most reliable way to get there.

To help you build and be part of an amazing team, I’ve outlined nine steps that successful leaders and team members use to move their groups toward greatness.

The Four Levels of Teams

Before diving into the steps, it’s important to understand the four levels of team performance. Where does your team fit today, and how can you move it to the next level?

The Dysfunctional Team: At the bottom are teams stuck in chaos. Members may have skills and motivation but lack clarity about their roles and goals. This often creates uncertainty and stagnation.

High-Performance Individuals: These teams consist of talented individuals working alongside one another but not as a cohesive unit. While they avoid dysfunction, they lack the collaboration necessary to elevate performance.

High-Performance Teams: These teams achieve solid success through collaboration and shared goals. However, they risk stagnating in a “good enough” mentality, which can prevent them from reaching their full potential.

The Dream Team: At the top are dream teams, where every member works together to co-elevate one another. These teams achieve exceptional results because they focus on helping everyone become their best while driving collective success.

Nine Steps to Build a Dream Team

  1. Make Everyone a Winner: Dream teams understand that individual success is tied to collective success. Team members actively help one another grow and succeed, creating exceptional outcomes. This means getting everyone aligned and rowing in the same direction, recognizing progress over perfection.

  2. Build a Team of Advocates: Great teams go beyond meeting expectations—they advocate for their clients, ensuring their needs are protected and their goals are achieved.

  3. Maximize Competence: Dream teams prioritize continuous improvement through coaching, mentoring, and development. Each member’s growth contributes to the team’s overall success.

  4. Have the Right People on the Bus: Dream teams are built with passionate, aligned individuals who believe in the team’s goals and are committed to contributing their best.

  5. Create a Strong Foundation: Shared values, clear strategies, and robust systems create the foundation for success. With this in place, teams can recruit talent that aligns with their vision.

  6. Show Up, Commit, and Contribute: Recognition of individual contributions and personal significance fosters stronger commitment and higher performance from all team members.

  7. Develop Quiet Confidence: Dream teams cultivate expertise and rely on facts and experience to exude a calm, quiet confidence that commands respect.

  8. Stay on Track: Even the best teams need systems and processes to maintain momentum. Regular benchmarking ensures the team continues to grow and improve.

  9. Communicate for Maximum Impact: Open, transparent communication is essential for trust and collaboration. Dream teams amplify each member’s voice to maximize their collective impact.

Whether you lead a team or are part of one, these nine steps can help you elevate your group to dream team status. When every member is aligned and committed to success—both individually and collectively—amazing results are inevitable.

summary: Achieving greatness requires more than individual effort — it takes a cohesive, high-performing team. Teams evolve through four levels, from dysfunction to a fully aligned "dream team," where members collaborate to elevate one another and achieve exceptional results. By following nine key steps — such as fostering shared success, advocating for clients, maximizing competence, and ensuring open communication — leaders and team members can build a strong foundation for success. Whether leading or contributing, aligning goals and committing to collective growth are essential for creating extraordinary outcomes.
